What is an ITIN [“ITIN number”] and why should I get one?

An Individual Tax Identification Number or ITIN is for individuals who are ineligible to obtain a Social Security Number — usually because of their immigration status. Obtaining an ITIN will allow you to file a tax return and receive certain tax benefits for you and your family. In order to apply for an ITIN, you must have earned income in the US to report on a federal tax return.
